ABSTRACT The volcanic rocks of Tertiary age of the southern Quitman Mountains in Hudspeth County, Texas, contain some rather unusual amygdules. The cavity fillings are mostly varieties of silica, but one zone has much calcite, and there are minor amounts of iron and manganese oxides, montmorillonite, and saponite. Although the El Paso area was partially explored by Europeans beginning late in the s, the Trans-Pecos saw no real settlement until Texas became a part of the United States. Before the Civil War a small settlement was established on the Texas side of the river at El Paso, and some mining activity was taking place in Presidio County. Geometrical Analysis and Deformational Environment of Minor Asymmetrical Folds, southern Quitman Mountains, Western Trans-Pecos Texas Craig W. Adams and Donald F. Reaser Summary of Tertiary Stress Orientations and Tectonic History of Trans –Pecos Texas Jonathan G. These volcanic and intrusive igneous rocks are well exposed in arid areas of the Trans-Pecos today. In the Texas Panhandle, streams originating in the recently elevated southern Rocky Mountains brought floods of gravel and sand into Texas. As the braided streams crisscrossed the area.
The floor of the bolson in Hudspeth County slopes to the southwest from the Diablo Plateau escarpment and Quitman Mountains to the Rio Grande, from elevations of 3,, feet to 3,, feet (George and others, ). The uppermost part of the Hueco Bolson aquifer includes the Rio Grande Alluvium. The Trans-Pecos Texas region, in the southeast part of the Basin and Range province, consists of topographically high plateaus and mountains separated by major normal faults from adjacent, topographically low desert basins. Description The present bulletin completes the work of preliminary exploration of the mountain region of Trans-Pecos Texas begun twenty years since by the University of Texas Mineral Survey and completed by the University of Texas Bureau of Economic Geology. The northern Quitman Mountains lie within the Sierra Madre Oriental structural province, where it projects northward from Mexico into Hudspeth County, Texas. The Permian Briggs formation with a maximum exposed thickness of about feet unconformably underlies the Jurassic Malone formation, which, although absent in places, attains a maximum.
